Some (mechanically activated) airbags cannot be deactivated by disconnecting the battery (see Component Awareness).

For most of the airbag systems, the drain down time of the capacitor in the SRS control unit starts as soon as all batteries are disconnected. Keep in mind that the drain time can vary between a few seconds to 30 minutes depending on the vehicle model. In the Crash Recovery System, this time can be found in the battery information window.

Sometimes it is absolutely impossible to access the battery in an emergency situation because of its location. If there is no disconnection point for the battery the emergency responder should turn of the ignition as mentioned before and continue, following all the safety precautions mentioned in this text.

Finding the battery can be a challenge on late model vehicles and there is also the possibility of multiple batteries. Battery locations vary depending on the manufacturer, the vehicle type and sometimes the engine variant.

On some vehicles, the battery is hidden under a seat or under a special cover. Sometimes it is possible to disconnect these batteries without direct access to the battery by disconnecting the negative battery cable, which is attached to the vehicles structure. The Crash Recovery System shows all battery disconnection points, when the battery cannot be accessed easily and also when they are present on the vehicle.

The Crash Recovery System shows firefighters where the battery or the batteries are located and can also assist to gain access to the battery.

Turning off the ignition on a late model vehicle can be difficult because there may not be an ignition key. Some vehicles use an electronic key and a start/stop button. Also be aware of sudden movements of the steering wheel and the seat, when the ignition key is removed as part of a luxury option called 'Easy entry'.

Always try to use the vehicles electrical system to assist the rescue before disconnecting the battery. Try to move electric seats, windows, the steering column etc.

Therefore the engine must be switched off, the ignition key turned to the off-position and the battery must be disconnected.

To reduce the risk of an accidental deployment of airbags, seatbelt pretensioners or automatic rollover protection system, it is necessary to perform an electrical shutdown of the vehicles electrical system.
